Ode to Canada
On July 1, 1867, the Dominion of Canada was formed. Canada Day‘s name was adopted in 1982 for this annual celebration, marked by parades, fireworks, and the display of flags.
So, with that in mind, let’s celebrate some amazing Canadian RTDs with two Vancouver Island gems!
Merridale Cidery & Distillery
Founded by Janet Docherty, Merridale Cidery is nestled in the picturesque Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island. Family-owned and operated for over three decades, the cidery is part of a vibrant estate that includes a working farm, distillery, farmhouse store, and eatery.

Specializing in traditional cider apples – known for their high tannins, bright acidity, and low sugar content – Merridale crafts ciders with complexity, texture, and depth. Among their diverse offerings, the standout is the Traditional Cider: An English-style, very dry and effervescent cider that strikes a perfect balance of body, fruitiness, and tannins. Whether enjoyed on its own or as the base of a creative cocktail, it’s a cider worth savoring. See the cocktail below!
Auld Lang Syne Cocktail
1. 1 oz Apple Liqueur
2. 5 oz Traditional Cider
3. Baked Cinnamon Apple.
Add apple liqueur to a rocks glass filled with ice. Top with cider. Stir well and garnish with a baked cinnamon apple. Enjoy on a hot summer’s day!
Strait & Narrow
Straight & Narrow proudly represents the West Coast, reflected in their packaging adorned with mountainous imagery. Their motto captures the spirit of connection: “At the end of every adventure, the greatest reward is a refreshing beverage shared with friends, both new and old.”

Each cocktail is crafted in-house using custom spirits, including a gin distilled with locally sourced botanicals. Their unique, ready-to-drink blends stand out in the market – flavors like Grapefruit Rosemary, Peach Elderflower, and Lemon Lavender are just a few that offer a refreshing twist. No mixing required – just crack one open and enjoy.
Whether you’re a traditionalist or an adventurer, there’s sure to be a Canadian-made cooler or cocktail that’ll suit your tastebuds. Merridale and Strait & Narrow are some of our favourite local picks, but Vancouver Island is full of great pours and unique flavours. We hope you choose to celebrate local makers this Canada Day, no matter what you’re drinking.
